Iconic Logo Design

Logo design is arguably "one of the hardest parts of graphic design".  It is also one of the most crucial elements to any business / organization / product brand image.

Understanding what makes a good logo, and implementation of good logo design principles, are how a logo becomes an effective and successful tool for you.

Using ’rules’ or ’design principles’ for logo design can also you to be very creative and will transend the design to be an effective business tool and help support a memorable brand identity.

A few simple rules of logo design:

•  Iconic
•  Symbolic
•  Simple
•  Mathematical
•  Mobile
•  Portable
•  Timeless
•  Unique

A logo is NOT a stylization of a name. It is a graphical element that is used to represent / illustrate your identity. The logo should always be simple and iconic. It is a business tool, not a picture or illustration. The logo may appear on its own OR beside / below / above the ’name’ of the business and/or product.

Here is an example of a brand image (timeline below) that has moved to an iconic logo design & correctly as they have a stylizatoin of thier name beside the logo -  no longer mixed together - as they wanted to improve brand loyality and sales : Pepsi

Another example of a corporation moving from using just a stylized name to using a proper logo and name to convey the brand image and increase market share: Xerox

(old name in capitals no logo)

(new logo and stylization of name)

When designing a logo, it is important to understand what it is supposed to do. What is it to communicate? Who is it (demographically speaking) to attract?  A logo is not just a mark - a logo reflects a business’s commercial brand via the use of shape, fonts, color, and / or images. Something that we humans can recognize at a very sub conscious level and it makes it easy to remember after the first time we see it.

It is very hard with all the messages we get inundated with, to remember specific names of business but a logo can be impressionable and memorable.  A logo is also used for inspiring trust, aiding in building ’brand loyalty’, causing recognition and admiration for a company or product.

It's our mission as creative directors & designers to create a logo that will do its job.

It is a tool.
A very important tool.
One that cannot be forgotten nor dismissed.
